The Lockdown What about engaging fights? Is a warrior-style Varian limited to waiting for enemies to attack before being able to provide utility for his team?
Thankfully, the answer is no. Varian can use Taunt for more than just peel. When combined with Warbringer, the level 4 talent for Charge, Taunt can keep an enemy hero locked down for 2.

Even for a warrior-style Varian, Warbringer just brings so much more to the table. Warbringer begins the stun chain combo. When fighting, your goal is to find an opportunity to trap someone where they can be an easily targeted by your teammates.
When you see that chance, you Charge the enemy hero, attack until the Stun effect expires, and cast Taunt once it does. This will keep the enemy standing exactly where they are, and they will be attacking you with basic attacks.

This is what makes Taunt effectively a stun for the affected enemy. The range is decent, but not too long, so you need to be careful about overextending if a target is backing away from you.
After level 4, this ability becomes a monster. It is a must-pick talent for Varian no matter what build you take. Charge also helps set up your stun chain by providing the initial 1 second of stun and allowing Varian to get in range for Taunt.

The only problem with tank Varian? He offers little CC and has no escapes. He has two slows and can talent into a short stun as his only CC.
However, taking the stun gives up the talent that allows him to actually soak damage as the tank. In addition, the main tank needs a way to escape as they are the primary scouter in rotations.
Other tanks still have ways to survive past the burst jump, slide, iron skin , but his survival is the proactive parry. He suffers from the same issues a solo tank Chen would suffer from.
In the perfect scenario, he can do it. In a double warrior lineup, Taunt makes him a low damage frontline with little CC or utility, and he is better off picking a different ult.
